Here is the second mystery Irish writer contained in Jean’s postcard. This writer is to be found in the third row from top, centre.
Our writer was born in 1854 and died in France in 1900. He is buried in the Père Lachaise cemetery.
Below is another portrait. In fact it is a statue to be found in Merrion Square, Dublin across from our writer’s childhood home.
If you still haven’t found his name, click on the links to have further information in French or in English.
The quotation on the postcard is taken from a poem called: The ballad of Reading Gaol
“Yet each man kills the thing he loves
By each let this be heard,
Some do it with a bitter look,
Some with a flattering word,
The coward does it with a kiss,
The brave man with a sword ! ”
Pourtant chacun tue ce qu’il aime,
Salut à tout bon entendeur.
Certains le tuent d’un oeil amer,
Certains avec un mot flatteur.
Le lâche se sert d’un baiser,
Et d’une épée l’homme d’honneur.
La Ballade de la Geôle de Reading ( traduction Jean Guiloineau)
Today also we start publishing a short-story called the Model Millionnaire by the same author with a translation into French.
